This semester has probably been the best one yet, and I’m not just saying that because I’m graduating! I had a pretty great team for the capstone project – Taylor was the team leader, I was in charge of design, Michael was in charge of structure, and Ciera was in charge of content. We had the amazing opportunity to work with a local non-profit organization – Home for Healing.
Our strengths as a team were communication, knowledge, and flexibility. We set up a team chat as well as a Google Drive work breakdown structure pretty early on, so everyone knew what to do. Every time we came to class, we had time to break off into team time and work on the project, so that was also very helpful.
Our client was also very easy to work with and gave us full artistic freedom on the side design and layout. We kept in touch with the client, but it was mainly reserved for brief updates since fall is a busy time for fundraisers and business in general. When our client saw the site during our final presentation, that is the first time she had seen the design!
One thing I learned from this project is how frustrating WordPress can be. Although it is a huge resource with so many benefits, I had issues with changes made reverting back to previous versions, sections not allowing editing, and strange text formatting that wouldn’t go away. Some of it may have been plugin or theme related, but other parts were just what seems to be typical glitches.
Overall the project went pretty smoothly, our team worked well together, and the client was very happy with the end product. I call that a win!
